Healthier Macaroni and Cheese: Part 1

We all love mac and cheese but we should weigh the pros and cons of eating to much of it. It’s no secret that pretty much every traditional macaroni and cheese recipe contains lots of butter, lots of cheese, and a fair amount of cream. Each of these ingredients adds fat to the mix. However, there are some things we can do to improve things on the health front.

The first strategy is to get rid of all that butter! Well, not necessarily all together gone, but at least cut back substantially. Cream is a killer! Cream gives macaroni and cheese a lot of its wonderful flavor, but it’s a real culprit in the battle to stay healthy. Instead of cream, try substituting with 2% milk or other low fat milk variations. Less cheese please. There are some cheeses out there that are low in fat, and high in flavor, give one a try.

With step one above are you giving up some of that serious mac and cheese flavor? Of course, but everything in life is about balance. If you have health issues, you simply may have no choice but to cut back on some of the fat that comes with a great dish of macaroni and cheese.
